Background

Bourne Heritage, which was set up in September 2020, represents the culmination of thirty years experience in the heritage sector, initially in field archaeology and then moving above ground to assess and evaluate the significance of built heritage. Both spheres of activity have been informed by a variety of historical research skills acquired along the way.

These historical research skills have served the needs of clients in both the public and private sectors, whether it be proving the existence of lost rights of way, determining land title for registration purposes, assisting with the de-registration of common land or simply ascertaining former land and building ownership. Over the last few years, desk-based historical research and trips to the archives have focussed on assessing the heritage significance of historic buildings for the purposes of listed building consent and planning applications.

Research is undertaken in national and local archives, including The National Archives in Kew (where I am registered as an independent researcher), the British Library and the Parliamentary Archives in Westminster.

Although based on the South Coast, Bourne Heritage provides heritage consultancy across London and the Home Counties, with a particular focus (and expertise) on West & East Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Advice and support has been given on a wide variety of schemes ranging from simple projects involving alterations/extensions to listed buildings all the way through to assessment of heritage impacts on large housing developments and mineral extraction schemes. Some examples are listed below.
